Break Out of the Boxes

4-Week Intermediate Guitar Intensive

A 4-week journey toward greater freedom, confidence, and expression on the guitar.

Week 1 — See the Fretboard Differently

Theme: From shapes to understanding

  • Establish where the player is currently comfortable on the neck

  • Map out key notes and root notes

  • Connect familiar pentatonic shapes rather than treating them as isolated boxes

  • Introduce a practical approach to the major scale

  • Explore how scales relate to chords

  • Apply the ideas to a simple backing track

Outcome: You begin to see connections across the fretboard instead of simply remembering isolated patterns.

Week 2 — Make Your Solos Say Something

Theme: From scales to musical phrases

  • Move beyond simply running scales

  • Explore bends, vibrato, slides and phrasing

  • Introduce target notes

  • Learn how to deliberately resolve phrases

  • Take a familiar pentatonic shape and create several different musical ideas from it

  • Improvise over a blues or minor-blues backing track

Outcome: Your improvising starts to sound more intentional and expressive rather than like you're searching for the next note.

Week 3 — Connect Rhythm & Lead

Theme: Seeing the guitar as one instrument

  • Introduce basic triads

  • Understand how triads connect to familiar chord shapes

  • Use small triad shapes to create interesting rhythm parts

  • Explore simple chord embellishments

  • Move between rhythm and lead ideas

  • Experiment with adding melodic fills between chords

Outcome: You start to see that rhythm guitar and lead guitar aren't two separate worlds—you can move between them.

Week 4 — Your Own Voice

Theme: Putting it all together

  • Choose a backing track or musical style that interests the player

  • Create a short improvised solo or musical passage

  • Combine familiar pentatonic ideas with the new fretboard connections

  • Use bends, phrasing and target notes deliberately

  • Incorporate triads, chord tones or melodic fills

  • Record a short performance

  • Identify the player's biggest remaining limitation and create a personalized practice direction

Outcome: You finish with something that actually sounds like your playing, rather than another exercise you've memorized.

The weekly structure

Each week:

1 × 60-minute personalized lesson
Introduce the concept, diagnose what's holding the player back, and immediately apply it musically.

1 × 15-minute follow-up Zoom
Review what happened during practice, troubleshoot, and refine the approach.

10–20 minutes of focused practice per day
Not “practice everything.” One clear musical objective.

Backing tracks + personalized exercises
The player should spend a significant amount of the practice time actually playing, not just drilling shapes.
